Every driver has a responsibility to keep themselves, their passengers, and others on the road safe. Distracted driving puts everyone at risk. The Carlton community, along with national and state partners, is working to raise awareness and encourage safe driving practices.
What is Distracted Driving?
When most people think of distracted driving, they picture texting behind the wheel. In fact, studies show that sending or reading a single text can take your eyes off the road for about 5 seconds. At highway speeds, that’s like driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed.
But texting is just one form of distraction. Distracted driving is any activity that takes your focus off the road, including:
-
Eating or drinking
-
Talking with passengers
-
Adjusting the stereo, GPS, or in-car entertainment systems
-
Applying makeup or grooming
-
Talking or texting on a mobile phone
Why It Matters
In 2019, an estimated 3,142 people lost their lives in crashes involving distracted drivers. Each of these tragedies was preventable. Raising awareness and changing habits can help save lives here in Carlton and across the nation.
