Stormwater Pollution Prevention

The City of Carlton is committed to providing high quality, clean water. Help us keep our water clean by preventing stormwater pollution.

We have listed below some of the common pollutants and how to avoid their entry into our stormwater system.

Pet Waste - Contains harmful bacteria.

  • Pick up and dispose of your pet waste properly.

Car products - Oils, fuels, and lubricants pollute water and harm ecosystems.

  • Recycle your car oil with Recology
  • Service your vehicle regularly to prevent leaks

Car Washing - Washing cars in driveways lets soap, oil, and dirt enter storm drains.

  • Wash cars at a commercial car wash to ensure that oils and gas are routed to special drains.

Sediments - Soil from construction or landscaping can wash into drains and damage aquatic habitats.

  • Cover exposed soils
  • Keep sediment piles away from waterways and storm drains

Household Products - Batteries, cleaners, and paints contain toxic metals.

  • Properly dispose of hazardous products.

Compost and Fertilizers - Excess nutrients cause harmful algal blooms and low oxygen in streams.

  • Keep compost away from waterways and storm drains.
  • Test soils before applying fertilizers and apply only a needed.
  • Do not fertilize when there is a chance of rain or irrigation.

Herbicides and Pesticides - Chemicals harm people, plants, and aquatic life.

  • Try using natural alternatives to chemical pesticides and herbicides.
  • Plant native vegetation that requires less water and fewer chemicals.

Pharmaceuticals - Flushed medicines can end up in drinking water.

  • Dispose of leftover or expired pharmaceuticals in the trash and not in the sink, toilet, or storm drain.
